The Complete Guide to Rainbow Sun Catchers: How to Get Bigger, Brighter Rainbow Beams

Have you ever applied a rainbow sticker to your window only to wonder why your room isn’t suddenly filled with magical rainbow beams?

The good news is that your suncatcher decal probably isn’t the problem. In most cases, the secret lies in where and how you place it.

As someone who designs and creates rainbow suncatcher decals, I’m often asked how to get the most spectacular rainbow effects. So I’ve put together this complete guide to help you turn a tiny window decal into a room full of dancing colour.

What Are Rainbow Stickers?

Rainbow stickers, also known as suncatcher decals or rainbow window decals, are made from a special diffraction material that splits sunlight into its individual colours.

When direct sunlight passes through the film, it creates rainbow beams that scatter across walls, floors and ceilings.

Unlike stained-glass window films that permanently colour the light, suncatcher decals create moving rainbow spectrums that change throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky.

The Secret to Bigger Rainbow Beams

If you only remember one thing from this guide, make it this:

Direct sunlight creates rainbows. Bright rooms do not.

Many people place their rainbow sticker on a window that receives plenty of daylight but very little direct sun.

A room can feel incredibly bright while still producing very few rainbow beams.

For the strongest effect, choose a window where the sun shines directly onto the glass.

Which Window Is Best?

The best window is usually the one that receives the most direct sunlight, regardless of its compass direction.

A simple way to find the ideal spot is to observe your windows throughout the day and note where sunlight falls directly onto the glass.

Generally:

  • East-facing windows receive direct morning sun.
  • West-facing windows receive direct afternoon sun.
  • In the Northern Hemisphere, south-facing windows often receive the most sunlight throughout the day.
  • In the Southern Hemisphere, north-facing windows often receive the most sunlight throughout the day.

However, neighbouring buildings, trees, verandahs and seasonal sun angles can dramatically affect light levels.

For that reason, the best advice is simple: choose the sunniest window in your home.

Clean Windows Matter More Than You Think

It sounds obvious, but dirty glass can significantly reduce the strength of your rainbow beams.

Dust, grime and fingerprints scatter incoming light before it reaches the diffraction film.

Before applying your decal:

  • Clean the window thoroughly.
  • Remove any residue or streaks.
  • Dry the surface completely.

A clean window allows more sunlight to pass through, resulting in brighter and sharper rainbow projections.

Why Do My Rainbows Move?

One of the magical things about rainbow decals is that the display is never the same twice.

As the sun travels across the sky:

  • Rainbow beams shift position.
  • Colours stretch and contract.
  • Different parts of the room become illuminated.

This movement is completely normal and part of the charm of a suncatcher decal.

How High Should I Place My Rainbow Sticker?

Most people instinctively place decals in the centre of a window.

However, the best position depends on where the sunlight hits.

Watch your window throughout the day and identify where direct sunlight falls for the longest period.

Placing your decal within that path will usually produce the strongest rainbow effect.

Sometimes the Sticker Really Is the Problem

If you’ve followed all the advice above and still aren’t getting dramatic rainbow beams, the quality of the decal itself may be the issue.

Not all rainbow stickers are made from the same diffraction material.

Over the years, I’ve had customers tell me they’d previously bought inexpensive rainbow decals online and were disappointed by the results. Often they produced a faint wash of colour but never the bold rainbow projections they were expecting.

Curious about the difference myself, I decided to run my own comparison test.

In a reel on my Instagram account, @alexconanillustration, I compared low-cost imported suncatcher decals purchased from Alibaba with my own Australian-designed decals under the same lighting conditions.

The results were surprising.

While the cheaper decals produced a soft rainbow glow, they struggled to create the large, vivid rainbow beams that filled the room when using my own decals. The difference wasn’t subtle — the higher-quality diffraction material produced dramatically brighter and more defined rainbow projections.

Of course, sunlight, window placement and weather will always play an important role. Even the best rainbow sticker can’t create strong beams without direct sun.

However, if you’ve placed your decal in a sunny window and still aren’t seeing the effect you hoped for, the quality of the diffraction film may be worth considering.

If you’d like to see the comparison for yourself, you can find the reel titled “Alibaba vs My Small Business – Part 2” on my Instagram account.

Why Some Rainbow Decals Create Bigger Rainbows

The rainbow effect comes from microscopic grooves within the diffraction film.

Higher-quality diffraction films are often able to separate sunlight more efficiently, creating:

  • Larger rainbow projections
  • More vivid colour separation
  • Sharper rainbow edges
  • Stronger rainbow beams across walls and ceilings

Lower-quality films can still create colour, but often produce a softer effect that doesn’t travel as far through a room.

That’s why two decals placed in the same sunny window can produce very different results.

Can I Use More Than One Rainbow Sticker?

Absolutely.

Using multiple decals can create a spectacular layered effect.

Rather than one concentrated rainbow beam, you’ll produce multiple rainbow projections that overlap and dance across the room.

Many customers start with one decal and quickly discover they want a second, third or fourth once they see the effect in person.

Why Are My Rainbows Faint?

If your rainbows seem weak, check the following:

The window doesn’t receive direct sun

This is by far the most common reason.

It’s a cloudy day

Rainbow decals still work in bright conditions, but the strongest effects appear when sunlight is direct and unobstructed.

Nearby buildings or trees block the sun

Even a sunny window can lose much of its rainbow potential if something outside is casting shade.

The decal isn’t in the sunniest part of the window

Try moving it to a different position and observe the results over several days.

The diffraction film is low quality

Not all rainbow decals are created equal. Some films simply produce a softer effect than others, even when placed in identical conditions.

Creating a Rainbow-Filled Home

One of my favourite things about rainbow decals is how they transform ordinary moments.

A quiet morning coffee becomes more magical.

A home office feels more inspiring.

A child’s bedroom turns into a room filled with colour and wonder.

The best part is that you don’t need expensive décor or major renovations. Sometimes all it takes is a small piece of diffraction film and a sunny window.

A Simple Trick for Stronger Rainbow Beams

If you’re trying to create the most dramatic rainbow display possible, here’s a little trick I use myself.

Try partially closing your curtains or blinds and leaving a small gap where the sunlight shines directly through your suncatcher decal.

By limiting the amount of light entering the room around the decal, the rainbow projections often appear brighter, more vivid and easier to see against surrounding surfaces.

Think of it like creating a spotlight for your rainbow sticker.

On particularly sunny days, this simple adjustment can produce incredibly striking rainbow beams that stretch across walls, ceilings and floors.
